But once you arrive there, the idea begins to make a certain sense. This perception was probably even more pronounced a few decades ago (and certainly centuries ago), when—far from the mainland and television—people in large parts of the island spoke Sardinian among themselves, and otherwise communicated in dialects that often carried more French than Italian overtones.

Sardinia’s geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean and the island’s topography meant that many regions were only rarely exposed to outside influences. Yet once a certain habitus or tradition established itself, it endured, was cultivated further, and eventually became part of Sardinian identity. Culinarily, this is reflected in a completely distinct food culture which, although it occasionally overlaps with Italian cuisine, has mostly followed its own path.

Wine has been made in Sardinia for around 3,000 years—longer than anywhere else in what is now Italy. The Phoenicians were most likely the first responsible for this; they not only founded Cagliari but also planted a few vines in the island’s soils. If these vines were indeed Nuragus and Malvasia—as not only ardent Sardinians but also serious ampelographers claim—then these two varieties, still cultivated today, would be among the oldest in the world. Etruscans, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Spaniards continued the tradition of viticulture and helped create the island’s broad and now entirely distinctive diversity of grape varieties. Cannonau likely arrived in Sardinia after the conquest of Alghero in 1354 by Peter IV of Aragon. known as Raica, are located in the spectacular Gallura region in northern Sardinia. Unlike the rest of the island, red grape varieties do not dominate here; instead, it is the white Vermentino that reigns supreme. And it has done so for a very long time, as evidenced, among other things, by the old vines used for Aranzu (Sardinian for “orange”).

Aranzu does not bear its name without reason. An approximately two-week skin fermentation extracts the corresponding color pigments into the wine, which is then matured in stainless steel and bottled unfiltered.

For those with little experience of skin-fermented wines, this one in particular comes highly recommended. Aranzu is impeccably clean and extremely precise. On the nose it conveys a sense of the island, recalling citrus fruits, thyme, and bay leaf, which on the palate are complemented by a fine salinity. The structure is linear and never expansive, and the alcohol level is surprisingly low by Sardinian standards. It is perfectly capable of standing on its own, but also cuts an excellent figure when paired with seafood.

Technical Data

Grape variety: Vermentino
Vineyard: Slate & sand
Harvest: By hand
Fermentation: Spontaneous | wild yeasts, multi-day maceration
Aging: In stainless steel tanks
Filtration: No
SO₂: < 50 mg/l
Alcohol: 13% vol.
Closure: Natural cork
Serving temperature: 10–12 °C
Optimal drinking window: From now until 2030
Volume and price per liter: 0.75 l (€29.87/l)

All winemakers listed at vinonudo work their vineyards using compost, organic fertilizers, and natural preparations, and refrain from using herbicides, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers.

With the frizzante Babbullicas (from the Sardinian word for “bubbles”), Eugenio Bocchino and Cinzia Pelazza open a new chapter in their oenological biography.
