Collection: Grillo

Grillo is a grape variety that is more closely associated with Sicily than almost any other, yet it apparently doesn't originate from the island. Its earliest documented mention in Sicily dates back to the 19th century, suggesting that it was likely introduced around that time—though its exact origin remains unclear. Most experts believe it arrived from Apulia after the phylloxera devastation.

Today, Grillo has firmly established itself—particularly in western Sicily—as the leading white grape variety in the region. It has been an essential component of Marsala for over a century and also plays a major role in the production of dry white wines around Trapani and Alcamo. Good Grillo typically carries aromas of Mediterranean herbs and ripe fruit. Its acidity is generally high, though that’s a relative statement given Sicily’s warm climate.
