Collection: Perricone
Until the late 19th century, wines made from Perricone were among the most popular in Sicily. However, the phylloxera louse arrived, leading to the significant decline of Perricone. Phylloxera vastatrix seemed particularly fond of Perricone's roots, nearly eliminating them entirely. Although other grape varieties suffered similarly, Perricone fell out of favor due to its lack of resistance and was rarely replanted afterward.
The small, ongoing renaissance of Perricone can be attributed to the increased interest in autochthonous varieties. Additionally, unlike many other Sicilian grape varieties, Perricone produces finely aromatic, medium-bodied, and well-structured wines with elegant and gripping tannins. Unfortunately, single-variety bottlings are still rare, but Perricone is increasingly playing a significant role in blends.
