Collection: Sgavetta

Sgavetta is a grape variety found exclusively around Modena and Reggio Emilia. It was first documented in the late 19th century and, in the few records that exist, it has always been described positively. In 1970, there were still 170 hectares planted with it, but by 2010 that number had dropped to just 15—and there likely aren’t many more (perhaps even fewer) today.

The steep and sudden decline is largely due to the grape’s small, very compact clusters, which can only be harvested by hand—a major disadvantage in a wine region like Emilia, where mechanization is the norm. Yet Sgavetta has all the attributes needed to produce excellent wines. It has thick skins which, when fully ripe, impart both ample color and tannin to the wine, a lively but not overpowering acidity, and a broad aromatic profile marked by dark berries and floral notes.
