Collection: Teran

Teran is one of those indigenous grape varieties that should be understood in the local context, alongside the culinary traditions of Istria and Friuli: with prosciutto and goulash, jota (the stew) and musetto (the boiled sausage), with the osmiza (the rustic wine tavern), the bora (the wind), and the Karst winter. Teran needs atmosphere and thoughtful food pairing. If you manage to give it both, you’ll not only begin to slowly understand it—you’ll also grow to genuinely enjoy it.

Teran is full of energy, with a gripping, vibrant acidity. Its color is so deep that in the Karst region it was long considered a cure-all for anemia. With a hefty dose of oenological intervention, its rough edges could easily be smoothed out to make it more universally palatable—but that would also strip it of its character and identity.

Teran belongs to the broad Refosco family and grows exclusively in the borderlands between Italy and Slovenia. Its name is supposedly derived from the German word Teer (tar), which seems entirely plausible once you've seen its inky black color.
