Dió is not a reference to some far-fetched sacred origin. The name comes from Hungarian, where dió simply means “walnut.” This makes perfect sense once you know that three large old walnut trees stand right beside the vineyard rows, and that Koppitsch is located less than 20 kilometers from the Hungarian border crossing at Nickelsdorf.
In the shade of these three walnut trees grow the grapes for Dió: Chardonnay on the one hand and Welschriesling on the other. This somewhat unusual yet beautifully harmonious pairing is rooted in the deep clay soils of Neuberg, a geologically diverse vineyard site that gently slopes toward Lake Neusiedl.
Harvested by hand, the whole grape clusters go straight into the press, where they are gently pressed. Without the addition of any additives, the juice is transferred into 2,000-liter acacia wood casks, where it ferments spontaneously and without temperature control before continuing to mature. Dió is bottled unfiltered and without added sulfur.
Dió is part of Alex and Maria Koppitsch’s so-called FUN Series. As such, the focus is on juicy, exotic fruit and a vibrant, refreshingly energetic drinking experience.
