A label straight out of an early Frank Miller comic — and a wine that leaves little room for compromise. This is serious stuff: power, energy, and so much substance that the six guys on the label would be absolutely delighted by it. Fittingly, Cabernet Sauvignon — not exactly known for subtlety — takes center stage here, supported by the far more nuanced Cabernet Franc, which reins it in just a little.
As always with the Valenzuela family, the vines grow at elevations of more than 1,000 meters above sea level, exposed to wind, high daytime temperatures (Barranco Oscuro is located in Andalusia), cool nights, and intense sunlight — all factors that leave their mark on the wine, just like the barren soils in which the roughly 30-year-old vines are rooted.
In the cellar, vinification is reduced to the bare minimum of intervention, as usual. No sulfur is added and no fining agents are used, though the wine is coarsely filtered. Aging takes place in used wooden barrels.
