Sissi is another fine piece in the formidable natural wine project of Katharina Salzgeber and Nikolas Saahs, aka semicolon; it brings together the two classic grape varieties of the duo – Riesling and Gewürztraminer – in a feather-light yet surprisingly profound Gemischter Satz.
The latter means that the two grape varieties come from the same vineyard and are harvested together at the same time. The grapes are then divided: one part is fermented on the skins, while the other is direct-pressed and put into cask. As is always the case with semicolon, Sissi is made from grapes grown biodynamically. In the cellar, intervention is reduced to the bare essentials – there is no fining, no filtration and no added sulphur.
The result is multilayered, clear, filigree, precise, elegant and profound. Top-notch.
