The highly interesting Purist Wines category includes the Moser family’s viticultural opus magnum: Grüner Veltliner Minimal. Austria certainly doesn’t lack interpretations of this grape variety, but versions that match the Minimal in intent and quality could — we’d say without hesitation — be counted on the fingers of a three-toed sloth. The vines for the Minimal grow in the Schnabel vineyard in the Kremstal region, rooted in a south-facing, bowl-shaped site with a shallow topsoil layer over rocky conglomerate.
Harvesting is done by hand, and vinification follows a strictly artisanal approach without the use of any chemicals. This also means that no sulfur is added — a risk one can only take with fruit that is meticulously selected and therefore absolutely immaculate. The wine is aged for nearly two years in used barriques and 500-liter barrels. It is neither fined nor filtered.
The Minimal has power, depth, and substance, yet remains open, elegant, and multi-layered. After more than six years in the bottle, it is in perfect balance — silky, soft, a long, calm flow. Its initial aromas are of ripe yellow fruit, caramel, and gingerbread; with some air it reveals further layers of scent. On the palate and beyond it is full-bodied and creamy.
