The Guarini Coccinella is the result of Aldo Viola's passion for Syrah. Convinced that the variety could deliver excellent results even in Sicily, if grown in well-ventilated, north-facing locations, he embarked on a search over two decades ago and found the perfect spot in Feudo Guarini, a tiny place 30 kilometers away from his winery in Alcamo. Since Aldo is not a man for half-measures, he not only worked with some already-existing vines but also planted several additional hectares, so today Syrah occupies nearly half of his vineyard.
The Guarini Coccinella is Aldo's entry-level Syrah. The only notable difference from the Guarini Plus in the vineyard is its northeast-facing exposition. Everything else is identical: 4,200 vines per hectare, an average yield of 1.5 kg per vine, and soils rich in clay and limestone.
In the cellar, the grapes are spontaneously fermented at 25-30°C, pressed after two weeks, and then aged in stainless steel tanks for 10 months. The Coccinella is bottled unfiltered, unfined, and without added sulfur, then further aged for three months in the bottle.
Style
Dark as the night over Alcamo. Intense, open, and inviting. Olives, bay leaves, and black berries. The velvety texture is counterbalanced by massive tannins. It flows gently and smoothly across the palate, yet remains juicy and stimulating throughout.
