Of the many tasks a wine merchant has to face, finding really good rosé is one of the most difficult. Far too often, rosé is little more than a waste product of red wine production or comes from sites and grapes that are not suitable for it. There are few winemakers who actually approach it seriously. Our ideal rosé builds a bridge to the red wines, offers inviting but never superficial flavours and combines subtlety with substance and lightness with depth.

Martin Gojer and his former colleague Philine Dienger wrote a short article for Triple A, the Italian distributor of Pranzegg wines, on the creation of Vino Rosso Leggero (Light Red Wine). It is fundamentally about the fact that artisan wines not only reflect the material world of the winemaker, ...

Many years ago, the Schillerberg rosé was the first Austrian rosé that gave me the feeling that this style of wine could also produce more than just banal summer wines in Central Europe. In the meantime, a few more rosés have been added, but Jörg Bretz's Schillerberg continues to reside firmly in...

Hungarian can even be simple. Rosza just means pink. No sz at the beginning and no three ö and four accents above the letters. Neszider is not really difficult either. It means Neusiedl am See, the home of Alexander and Maria Koppitsch. Neusiedl belonged to Hungary until 1921, and in honour of th...

Rori's 50-year-old vineyards are the youngest he has. They are located 600 metres above sea level in quasi-black soil on the northern slopes of the great Sicilian volcano. The two classic red Etna varieties Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are rooted in them alongside the two classic white...

A rosé in response to social conditions and political scaremongering. "At a time when concepts of purity, origin and identity are constantly being conjured up, we wanted to blend and unite the skins of our different grape varieties." Corrado Dottori sets an example. At the same time, however, he ...

A rosé from the Andalusian Alpujarras, from one of the highest Pinot Noir vineyards in the world. At 1300 metres, freshness and fruit are guaranteed, but the intense light reflecting off the slate soils and the often scorching summer heat during the day also ensure that the sugar is stored in the...

Bardolino, the small wine region around the place of the same name on Lake Garda, was once famous for his rose wine - the Chiaretto. He became a victim of mass tourism on his banks. For a few years and undeterred by the dreary reputation of the area Daniele Delaini from Villa Calicantus, he has ...

Heydi Bonanini's rosé was not a planned wine. It was created in response to a hailstorm that fell right over his Canaiolo vineyard in 2016 and wiped out his entire harvest in a matter of minutes. Thrown back to his other two red varieties, Bonamico and Moscato Rosso, he decided to leave the two ...

What happens when you simply let the soil, climate and your own handwriting speak for itself in a wine and leave out the grape variety(ies) and the weather? Some would say that this would be pure terroir - we don't say that, but we still find the experiment exciting and the wine great.  What we ...

Like few other Italian grape varieties, Lagrein is suitable for rosati that not only want to convey freshness but also depth. The reason for this is the thick, dark, extract-rich skins, which release colour, aromas and tannins even on brief contact with the juice.  Martin Gojer's Lagrein vines a...

Autoclaves or pressure tanks represent the industrialisation of Lambrusco in both symbolic and concrete terms. They can be used to produce sparkling wines quickly and cost-effectively. Their quasi-universal introduction in the 1950s led to a multiplication of production, but also to a standardis...
