In the Cerro Las Monjas vineyard of Barranco Oscuro in the Alpujarras - the southern part of the Sierra Nevada - Garnacha, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grow on a few hectares of vines. Despite the altitude, the vines produce perfectly ripe grapes every year, which is hardly surprising as the vineyard is located at the same latitude as Tunis.
This has a lot to do with Manuel Valenzuela's 40 years of experience, but is also due to the special conditions to which the vineyard is exposed: on the one hand, there is the sea, which may seem far away, but whose moisture in the form of clouds constantly brings urgently needed water to the vineyard. Secondly, at an altitude of over 900 metres, the light changes, becomes more intense and leads to a change in photosynthesis, which in turn has an effect on the plant, the grape skin and the pulp and, obviously, on the aromas. Last but not least, the massive temperature differences between day and night, which can sometimes be over 20°, also play a role.
Style
Has power & structure, elegance & depth, dark fruit & pepper. The 1368 is complex yet inviting, juicy and cool and has a lively acidity that gives it tension and energy. It is densely woven and full-bodied and constantly pushes towards the palate. After almost 10 years in the bottle, the texture is soft, the body balanced and the finish delicately spicy and persistent.
