‘As long as they pour you water on the Via Emilia - the road that leads from Milan to Rimini - you are in Emilia, but as soon as they give you wine to drink, you are in Romagna (Antonio Baldini).’ And not just any wine, but Sangiovese, the red queen of Italian grape varieties, the origin of which is still the subject of dispute between Tuscans and Romagnolians.
Even if this conflict is unlikely to be resolved for the time being, it is at least certain that Sangiovese has been cultivated in Romagna for centuries and is also known there in dialect as Sanzvais.
Tenuta Saiano pays tribute to this fact with its formidable red entry-level wine. Matured in cement for eight months after three weeks of skin contact, this is a table wine in the very best sense of the word. It is inviting and easy to drink, offers red fruit and floral notes, has sufficient tannin to adequately accompany weighty dishes and a body that is both light-footed and profound.
