You can only take your hat off to Niki Moser. He and his team cultivate 24 hectares in Rohrendorf in the Kremstal using biodynamic methods, with a further 27 hectares 150 kilometres further south in Apetlon, in the Pannonian Plain. The effort involved is enormous, but now - after well over a decade of biodynamics - one cog seems to mesh with the other. The wines have a clear signature and have been at an extremely high level across all styles for years.
His Zweigelt Minimal is an almost unrivalled masterpiece. We know of no better version of this grape variety. The grapes for the 2012 Minimal were harvested by hand in his Hedwigshof vineyard, which was planted 50 years ago, transported to Rohrendorf and immediately fermented spontaneously. The wine was then placed in small used wooden barrels, where it developed its flavours for the next 18 months without any intervention. Without being fined or filtered, it was then bottled without the addition of sulphur.
Style & flavours
The Minimal has power, depth and substance, yet is open, inviting and elegant. After more than six years in the bottle, it is in absolutely perfect balance - velvety, soft, powerful, a long, calm flow. It is dark fruity, peppery, offers dark spicy and sweet flavours, in short: it is multi-layered, complex and long and is a pleasure with every sip.
