The name L1 is derived from the name of Davide Spillare's upper lumbar vertebra, which was broken in a tractor accident a few years ago (as good as the L1 tastes to us, we hope that there will be no L2). The L1 is a Rifermentato, i.e. a wine that undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle after a first fermentation in steel tanks, with neither disgorgement nor dosage at the end.
This means that the yeast in the wine is not removed (dégorgement) and is therefore not topped up with a sugar solution or sweet wine reserve (dosage).
This has various sensory and aesthetic consequences: firstly, the wine is not transparent as the yeast remains in the wine until the end, and secondly, the frizzante retains important flavours that would otherwise be discarded along with the yeast.
Style
Davides L1 smells of and is otherwise characterised by the soft texture of Garganega. Anyone looking for sophisticated alternatives to Prosecco or simply wanting to try something new should be more than happy with Davides Frizzante version.
