A frizzante from Catarratto by Aldo Viola. Produced according to the metodo ancestrale, i.e. by secondary fermentation in the bottle without subsequent disgorging and dosing.
There are several possible explanations for the BRUTTO (Italian for ugly) in the name and the duck on the label.
Firstly, it is, in a nutshell, a play on words with "brut" - dry, and secondly, a reference to Aldo's time as a nursery school teacher in Copenhagen, where he probably had to read "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Andersen to the children more than once. According to literary scholar Matthias Jung, the latter is "the archetype of the outsider" - and the only fizzy drink in Aldo's range can of course be interpreted as such.
Last but not least, in Italy there is a nice play on words called "brutto ma buono", which is applied to all sorts of foods that don't quite conform to the norm but are still delicious. Aldo's brut is only a little cloudy (not disgorged) and definitely not "ugly", but it certainly tastes good.
It tastes of herbs, grapefruit and white peaches. There is also a subtle minerality, a vital but balanced acidity, a fine perlage and a finish characterised by macchia and ginger notes.
