The Guarini Coccinella is the result of Aldo Viola's passion for Syrah. Convinced that the variety could also produce excellent results in Sicily in well-ventilated and north-facing locations, he set out on a search a good two decades ago and found what he was looking for in Feudo Guarini, a microscopic location 30 kilometres from his vineyard in Alcamo. As Aldo is not a man for half measures, he planted a few more hectares alongside a few existing vines, so that Syrah now accounts for a good half of his vineyard area.
The Guarini Coccinella is Aldo's introduction to the world of Syrah. Out in the vineyard, the only notable difference to the Guarini Plus is its north-east facing exposure. The rest is identical: 4200 vines per hectare, an average yield of 1.5 kg/vine, clay and chalky soils.
In the cellar, the grapes are fermented spontaneously at 25-30°, pressed after two weeks and the wine is then left in steel tanks for 10 months. The Coccinella is bottled unfined, unfiltered and unsulphurised and matured for a further three months in the bottle.
Style
Dark as the night over Alcamo. Intense, open and inviting. Olives, laurel and black berries. Velvety texture is given contra by massive tannin. Flows rather warmly and softly towards the palate, but always remains juicy and animating.
