Colombera & Garella: Lessona Crose 2021
- €34,90
With just 18 hectares under vine, Lessona is the smallest of the three DOC zones where the Colomberas cultivate vineyards.
Despite its microscopic dimensions, Lessona boasts a few distinctive features that set it apart from the other two regions. First, there's the climate: in certain exposures, it takes on an almost Mediterranean character, which results in a warmer and more powerful style in the “Lessona” compared to the other two wines. Second, the subsoil is composed of marine sand deposits with some of the lowest pH levels in all of Italy, rich in iron, manganese, and potassium. Lastly, the grape composition also differs from neighboring Bramaterra: in Lessona, Nebbiolo must make up at least 85% of the blend. The permitted blending partners are Vespolina and Uva Rara—though Colombera uses only Vespolina.
Fermentation takes place spontaneously in concrete tanks, and the wine is aged for two years in used French barriques.
Style
Floral, balsamic, concentrated, and spicy. The Lessona occupies a unique place in the Colombera & Garella lineup—warmer, fruitier, aromatically darker, and a bit more expansive than the other two wines. Acidity and tannins provide structure but are beautifully balanced within a body that integrates them seamlessly. The finish is focused, powerful, and marked by peppery, spicy notes.
