Filippo Gamba consistently produces top-quality wines, and his two interpretations of the Terreni Bianchi — from white, limestone-rich soil — on the western slopes of the Colli Euganei are excellent examples of this. The white version is taut, direct, and profound, and similar praise can be given to the formidable red version, which includes Merlot as part of the cuvée, with old native varieties — Turchetta, Recantina, Corbinona, and Pattaresca — making up the rest. Filippo planted these latter varieties about 10 years ago with the goal of reviving grape varieties that were once native to the Colli Euganei but have now nearly disappeared.
The Terreni Bianchi Rosso is vinified according to the principles of the natural wine organization Vinnatur, of which "Alla Costiera" has been a member for many years. In short, this means that the destemmed grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation, and the wine is neither fined nor filtered. The aging process takes place in glass-lined cement vessels over the course of 14 months.
This results in a wine with aromas of ripe red fruits, underbrush, and earth, with a fine spiciness on the finish. Thanks to the limestone-dominated soils, the wine is clear and defined, subtle and elegant. The overall impression is inviting, finely structured yet deep, with a finish that is powerful, juicy, and vertical.
