Vintages are always a big topic in the wine world. We agree that they are not entirely unimportant, but we do not share the hype about them and are rather sceptical about the views on what is really great and what is rather lousy. Firstly because we can remember massive errors in judgement since the 2003 vintage, and secondly because we are convinced that really good winemakers are at their best when they are dealing with really difficult vintages.
If we remember correctly, the 2008 vintage was pretty much beaten down by the Austrian trade magazines, which have always been favourable. In their opinion, rain at the wrong time had not only depressed the quantity of red wines in particular, but also the quality.
If you were to interview the judges of that vintage today, many of them would probably deny ever having said or written a bad word about the vintage. Those who would still grumble about it, on the other hand, could be presented with Jörg Bretz Pinot Noir, which obviously wasn't too bothered by the rain. Above all because Jörg found the right viticultural answers to the anything but easy conditions, harvested his grapes at the right time and ultimately vinified them with the necessary calm and patience.
Jörg's Pinot is cool, elegant, subtle, earthy, red-fruited and, despite its mature age, lively and dynamic. It appears light and ethereal and yet has depth, power and character, is open and accessible and has tension and energy on the palate.
