In addition to pastures, olive trees, wheat fields, forests, vegetable gardens, a restaurant and a guesthouse, the 100 hectares of land at Tenuta Saiano also include a vineyard with Greccheto Gentile, also known as Pignoletto.
With L'Animo, the Maggioli family produces a small masterpiece from this variety, which is often vinified into completely irrelevant wines. Its vines certainly benefit from the geology of the Valmarecchia hills, which are criss-crossed by veins of gypsum, but the end result also illustrates how meticulously and conscientiously Tenuta Saiano deals with the grape variety both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Outside in the open air, the work is carried out in an artisanal and certified organic manner. Inside the cellar, the grapes are pressed briefly and then left on the skins for three days - long enough to give the wine a lasting structure, while at the same time allowing the terroir and the grape variety to have the first and last word.
L'Animo is full-bodied, has grip and a compact texture, is lively and animating and is based on flavours that are crystal clear and precisely reminiscent of fresh, juicy yellow fruit and meadow flowers. It is long, vertical, taut, mineral and persistent and should benefit from the slow passage of time over the next decade.
