With the location of La Querciola (small oak), everything started on Massa Vecchia, everything from Francesca Sfondrini, who has long since rose to cult status. Located in the Colline Metallifere striking shadow in the Alta Maremma, her parents, Fabrizio Niccolaini and Patrizia Bartolini, there in 1972 Sangiovese, Alicante and Trebbiano Toscano in the underground characterized by Galestro. From the beginning, the two buildings opened an intensive relationship with their country and used to understand that only a conscious and non-invasive agriculture would produce, dynamic and expressive wines. Francesca and her partner Stefano Costagli saw no reason to shake this philosophy and continue to continue the wine that was once taken.
The La Querciola is one of the central wines from Massa Vecchia and at the same time one of the monuments of the Italian natural wine movement. It consists of 80% of Sangiovese (which is usually a little warmer in Maremma, denser and softer than in Montalcino or Chianti) and 20% of Alicante, the Tuscan variant of the Grenache.
The handlesed grapes are spontaneously fermented in open wooden tubs without temperature control and then pressed. The wine is then moved to used barrels, where it matures on the yeast for several years before it is filled unfiltered and with a minimal SO2 addition.
style
Rustic, warm, meaty. Earthy notes shaped by undergrowth combine with ripe red fruit aromas. The texture is concentrated and fabric, the body powerful, expansive and juicy. Acid and tannin control a little without undermining the baroque tendency of the La Querciola. Leaves sustainable fruit and spice reminiscences on the palate.
