The Rét is part of Alexander Koppitsch's Fun series. The word is Hungarian and means "grassland," referencing the fact that where Zweigelt and St. Laurent now grow, cattle once grazed.
The vines are planted on a plateau about 30 meters above Lake Neusiedl. The terrain features gravelly topsoil—deposits from the Danube River that once flowed here—with sandy subsoil. These warm soils, combined with nearly all-day sunlight, lead to relatively early grape ripening.
Vinification, as with all Koppitsch wines, is primarily guided by the intention to transform the grapes into wine without manipulation. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with wild yeasts, and the wine is aged in large wooden barrels for nearly a year. No fining or filtration is performed, and sulfur is added only if it is believed to support the wine's development.
Style
Playful and light-footed, the Rét falls into the category of serious drinking wines that balance enjoyment with substance and drinkability with depth. The aromatic focus is on fruit, subtly accompanied by a delicate spiciness in the background. The finish is refreshing and invigorating.
