Filippo Gamba reliably produces top-class wines. His two interpretations of the Terreni Bianchi - from white, i.e. chalky soil - on the western foothills of the Colli Euganei are excellent examples of this. The white version is taut, straightforward and profound and the same can be said of the formidable red version, in which Merlot makes up one part of the cuvée and old indigenous varieties - Turchetta, Recantina, Corbinona, Pattaresca - the other. Filippo introduced the latter around 10 years ago with the aim of revitalising varieties that were once native to the Colli Euganei but have now virtually disappeared.
Terreni Bianchi Rosso is vinified according to the principles of the natural wine organisation vinnatur, of which Alla Costiera has been a member for many years. In a nutshell, this means that the destemmed grapes are fermented spontaneously and are neither fined nor filtered. Ageing takes place in vitrified cement vats and lasts 14 months.
In sensory terms, this results in aromas reminiscent of ripe red fruit, undergrowth and earth, followed by a fine spiciness. Thanks to the limestone-dominated soils, everything appears clear and contoured, subtle and elegant. The overall impression is inviting, delicate but profound, the finish is powerful, juicy and vertical.
