Romagna is Sangiovese country. Some believe that this is where the great central Italian grape variety originated - and not in Tuscany. In Valmarecchia, the home of Tenuta Saiano, it has been planted for centuries in a soil whose mixture of chalk, sandstone and clay gives the variety tension and structure.
The grapes of Mai Uguale, Tenuta Saiano's masterpiece, come from the estate's highest vineyards. As a result, they ripen later and generally have a little more extract and acidity than those from lower-lying plots. Harvested by hand, the whole, uncrushed grapes are fermented spontaneously and matured for 18 months in large oak barrels.
The result is beautiful: balanced and complex, with flavours that range from cherries and citrus fruits to violets and undergrowth and are carried across the palate by a cool and elegant body with no wavering.
