Albarola

Albarola is a white grape variety from Liguria that is found almost exclusively from Genoa downwards. After many years of research, ampelographers now seem to agree that it is identical to Bianchetta genovese (although, as is so often the case, winegrowers have different opinions on this). It is rarely vinified on its own, and there are reasons for this. Its flavour is so neutral that it borders on boredom.

It only becomes interesting when the skins come into play. Then it gains structure and intensity and reveals a variety of flavours that one would hardly expect.

It also plays an important role as a cuvée partner. In the Cinque Terre, it is usually paired with the much more interesting but sometimes somewhat less acidic Bosco, which it gives structure and vitality.
