Pian di Peu lies not far from the Colombera family winery in Masserano, on a high plateau shaped by volcanic porphyry sand at around 350 meters above sea level. It is planted exclusively with Nebbiolo, which—thanks to the relatively low pH of the soil and the resulting slow ripening of the grapes—typically shows a focused and compact structure.
The vines face southeast to southwest, receiving sun throughout the entire day—anything but a disadvantage in this area, which is strongly influenced by alpine thermals. Viticulture is organic, yields are low at around 3,500 kg per hectare, and harvesting is, of course, done by hand.
In the cellar, Giacomo and his partner Cristiano Garella work at the highest level of craftsmanship. In short, this means they refrain from using any additives aside from a small amount of SO₂ (around 30 mg/l), keep a close eye on the spontaneous, non-temperature-controlled fermentation, extract tannins and aromas gently through occasional pump-overs, and then allow the wine to find its balance—first over two years in used wooden barrels and then for one year in the bottle.
The result is cool, structured, straightforward and clear, deep yet inviting, with aromas that reflect the layered complexity Nebbiolo is known for—dried flowers appear in the flavor profile alongside earthy, mineral notes and red berries. On the palate, Pian di Peu feels powerful and linear: youthful, yet already a pleasure to drink.
