Blaufränkisch Spitzerberg 2013
Blaufränkisch Spitzerberg 2013

Where the Spitzerberg has not been reshaped to suit the wishes of motocross riders or glider pilots, a rich and varied vegetation thrives — dominated by dry grasslands and rocky steppes, occasionally leaving small niches for viticulture.
Here, Jörg Bretz tends Blaufränkisch vines that have been rooted for several decades, mainly in mica schist. They have had ample time to sink deep into the subsoil in search of the scant water available on the Spitzerberg. The vineyards are farmed organically, and the winemaking — as always with Jörg Bretz — is slow, deliberate, and guided by the intention of giving the terroir the time it needs to express its many, often subtle nuances in the wine.
Style
Muscular, juicy, and precise. Warmer in tone than wines from Lake Neusiedl. Dark aromas take the lead. Tannins and acidity provide structure but are well integrated and never intrusive. On the palate, it feels dense and concentrated, and despite its age, it seems only at the beginning of its career.
