Sivi Pinot – better known as Pinot Gris or Grauburgunder – is one of the white grape varieties whose fully ripe berries are not truly white. Instead, they shimmer in copper-blue tones in the autumn. Accordingly, wines made from this variety, when fermented on the skins, take on the color of a robin – "Gardelin" in Slovenian.
Aleks ferments the Grauburgunder on the skins for four days before aging it for one year in 500-liter acacia wood barrels. It is then further developed for another year in a 2000-liter acacia wood barrel. In the third year, the wine is decanted in stainless steel tanks, allowing it to be bottled unfiltered but relatively clear. Sulfur addition is kept to a minimum.
Style
Klinec's Gardelin reveals its kinship with Pinot Noir, embedding cool red berry aromas, forest floor notes, and subtle spiciness into a tightly woven texture. The structure is elegant, vertical, playful, and disciplined at the same time.
