Nevio Scala’s Malvasia pays tribute to the Cretan port city of Monemvasia. It was from there that, several hundred years ago, the first Malvasia vine cuttings were shipped to the “maritime republic” of Venice, which had annexed Crete in 1204. To this day, however, it remains unclear which members of the Malvasia family those vines actually belonged to. Malvasia spread so rapidly across the Mediterranean that medieval marketing experts soon began calling almost anything that tasted reasonably good “Malvasia.” Even today, Italy alone counts 16 members of the family, which are only rarely related to one another.

For his vineyards, Nevio has chosen Malvasia Istriana vines. In the Colli Euganei they encounter conditions somewhat different from those of their core growing area around Trieste, but they seem to thrive in the slightly warmer temperatures and volcanic soils.

Fermented on the skins for five days and aged for over nine months in concrete tanks, the resulting wine is a perfect introduction to the world of skin-contact wines.

Style & Aromas

Juicy, soft and well balanced. Peach, orange and white flowers. Finely spiced. Gentle tannins and a soft yet structuring acidity. Full-bodied. Inviting. Harmonious.
