Zweigelt was at the top of our personal list of outlawed grape varieties for years. This was followed by Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller and a few more varieties that have long since received their absolution, as well as Zweigelt. We believe that we have little to do with age milds, but mainly with an ever larger number of excellent winegrowers who have said goodbye to conventional approaches and, through intelligent vineyard work, individual skill and the right decisions in the basement, disclose the sunny sides of the once spurned varieties. This goes so far that you can no longer pull in peace over Müller Thurgau, because people like Martin Gojer and Antonio Baruffadi get brilliant wines out of it.
It is no different with the Zweigelt. Niki Mosers Zweigelt Minimal, Sepp Patterns Zweigelt Graf and, last but not least, HP Harrers Zweigelt from the Ried Seefeld show that there is much more potential in the variety than we once suspected. HPS vines have 35 years on their hump and are managed according to Demeter criteria (so the vines should still have a long life in front of them). To get the whole substance out of the grapes, they are on the mash for five weeks. After that, the wine is matured in used barrels before it is filled unfiltered and filled with a minimal sulfurization.
style
The tannin grabs and directs the wine focused towards the palate. Cool, structured and juicy. Shows that even in a warm vintage like 2015, you could get finely knitted, elegant and yet profound wines.
