Trebbiano Spoletino can only be found in and around Montefalco. How the grape variety got there or whether it has always been there is still unclear. In the vineyard, it displays the typical characteristics of its large family: it is robust, ripens late and generally has high acidity levels. Otherwise, however, it seems to have very little in common with the other, often watery and bland Trebbiano varieties that can be found in abundance in Italy's vineyards.
At least in Francesco Mariani's version: he cultivates his Trebbiano vines according to strict organic guidelines, picks them selectively in mid-October and then macerates them for eight days. After fermentation, he matures the wine for five months in cement and a further two months in the bottle before bottling it unfined and unfiltered.
Francesco's Trebbiano Spoletino was one of the most unexpected and beautiful discoveries this year. Open and engaging from the first second, it captivates with elegance and clarity, autumnal flavours, body and balance. It is cool and inviting, has depth and substance and is sure to age beautifully.
