If you are looking for classic Chardonnay, you should keep looking. If, on the other hand, you fancy a little Andalusian avant-garde, you should find what you are looking for.
The Cardonohay is full-bodied, dense, mineral and even accompanied by a little fruit and is definitely reminiscent of Chardonnay. But it is also salty, chalky, austere and nutty, and anyone thinking of fino sherry, the great Andalusian wine style, is not wrong either. It is a combination of both, which is immense fun and shows that stylistic extensions of the grape variety are always justified.
Cardonohay has its origins in a vineyard in the Alpujarras at an altitude of 1300 metres. The light up there is more intense than 1000 metres further down and the day/night differences are often more than 20 degrees. The dryness plays a not insignificant role and the chalky soils also have a significant influence. All of this, as well as the hands-off philosophy practised by Barranco Oscuro in the cellar, leave their mark on the wine and ensure that the Cardonohay lacks neither freshness and vitality nor originality and character.
