Wines from the Veneto
The Veneto is large in many respects. Alongside Sicily, it is the largest wine-growing region in Italy. It organises the country's largest wine fair in Verona (Vinitaly) and the largest event dedicated exclusively to natural wines in Gambellara (vinnatur). Its cellars are the source of an immense quantity of the worst industrialised wines and an equally impressive number of highly individual and expressive wines.
The Veneto is extremely heterogeneous: From the eastern shore of Lake Garda to the border with Friuli, the wine-growing regions of Valpolicella (all red), Soave, Gambellara (white) and Prosecco (sparkling) are completely different and are complemented by a number of completely independent areas such as Monte Lessini, the Colli Berici or the volcanic cones of the Colli Euganei that rise up in the middle of the Po Valley. There are a good 50 different grape varieties, with both local and international varieties depending on the region.
