Daniel Schweizer is an exceptional figure in the Württemberg lowlands. Since taking over his family's winery in 2014, he has explored new and sometimes long-forgotten approaches in both the vineyard and the cellar. He is supported, among others, by the Fjord mare Funa, who takes over the work usually done by tractors where the Riesling vines take root in gypsum keuper soil. This has a dual advantage: the soil remains uncompacted and is naturally fertilized.

All vineyard work, from pruning to harvest, is done by hand. Once the grapes are picked, fermentation occurs spontaneously. The grape skins always remain in contact with the pressed juice. The wine is never fined or filtered, and sulfur is added only minimally if at all. Aging takes place in used barriques for nearly a year.

Style

A Riesling of a different kind. Those looking for stone fruit may search in vain; instead, one will find mineral notes, herbs, and citrus aromas. The structure is naturally firm, the acidity ripe yet never aggressive, and the tannins present but never overpowering. Bone-dry and remarkably vibrant, the Funa combines fine texture with elegance and dynamism.
