Sicily is a slowly awakening universe of different terroirs in which an ever-increasing number of excellent natural wines are being produced.

The island is so diverse that it makes little sense to lump it all together. 1 DOCG, 23 DOC and 8 IGT speak a clear language in this respect - although, as is so often the case when assessing Italian regions of origin, one wonders why Cerasuolo di Vittoria is the only wine style to enjoy DOCG status. Be that as it may, good winegrowers and spectacular wines can be found everywhere. At the moment, they are probably most often found around Mount Etna, although the hype surrounding the volcano seems a little exaggerated to us and the focus on its red wines obscures the fact that the white wines made from Carricante are also often truly outstanding.

Speaking of grape varieties: their often astonishing qualitative potential is being explored down to the last detail. Often with surprising and extremely pleasing results: some artisan winegrowers, for example, have exorcised Nero d'Avola of its clumsiness and replaced it with elegance and clear aromas, while others have begun to successfully elicit multi-layered and complex aromas from Catarratto and Grillo, which have been labelled as insignificant.

Cataratto has always been the workhorse among the island's white grape varieties, and you could taste it. Only recently have there been a small number of winegrowers who have really got to the bottom of the character of Catarratto and are breaking new ground. Aldo Viola is setting completely new ...

Fabio Ferracane can also do Grillo. Although Catarratto is clearly the leitmotif in his range of grape varieties, he also has a small vineyard in which the second important white grape variety Marsalas is rooted. It is located in the plain behind the salt pans of the western Sicilian town, where,...

Before Etna became a hotspot for completely independent and globally sought-after red wines a good 10 years ago, the greater attention of traders and journalists - who were hardly interested in the region at the time - was primarily focussed on its white interpretations, which were almost without...

Cuvée made from Nerello Mascalese (80%) and Grenache (20%). The first grape variety is obvious, the second comes as something of a surprise. Grenache can be found in many Italian wine-growing regions, but hardly ever under its original name: In Sardinia it is called Cannonau (and is by far the mo...

For a long time, the Catarratto grape variety was synonymous with simple and mostly insignificant wines. Its name means waterfall in German and is due to the fact that Catarratto - if you put your mind to it - can produce almost unbelievable quantities of grapes, which has naturally been done. Fa...

The Camaleonte (Chameleon) is - as the name suggests - a somewhat unusual rosé. In contrast to the usual practice, it is not a red variety that is briefly macerated, pressed and vinified, but rather wines that are already finished are cuvetised and blended into one big whole. Fabio Ferracane use...

Jura meets Marsala. The Muffato is - as sometimes happens with the production of special wines - a child of chance. Its mother was a barrel of Catarratto that was filled in 2013, but was then forgotten. Over the years, a little wine always evaporated in it, over which - increasingly exposed to th...

Marsala is hot and dry. As the crow flies, it is the same distance to Tunis as it is to Catania. People move slowly and work until ten o'clock in the morning in summer - after that, the sea breezes hardly help. Catarratto has few problems with the heat. On the contrary. The variety really comes i...
